Houston Project 2010

I wanted to write this a couple of days ago, but for some reason the site wouldn't allow me to log in, hmmm. I wanted to share what Houston Project is (@houstonproject) and what we are doing to reach our city of Houston.

First off Houston Project is a outreach to our city, by the church I go to Houston's First Baptist Church (@houstonsfirst) as we share God and His love for the people of Houston through Bible Study, Vacation Bible Study, Feeding them nightly, giving the children school supplies and going back throughout the year to continue share God's love and care for the people in the communities we go to. We are currently involved in reaching out to over 12 communities and apartment areas.

Alot of these areas we go to are government run housing projects where people go and almost end as forgotten cast-offs that society would be as happy to forget about. These people are in desperate need of God and all the love we can share, for some have forgotten what love is or worse yet, have no true idea of what love is.

The church gets opportunity to sign up for specific sites, some close to where they live, some places they have served before and some just feel that is where God has called them to serve. Then we meet together and see where we feel like serving within the site, such as Vacation Bible Study for ages 3-10, or SPAM which is the middle school and high school outreach, men and women's Bible study, prayer and evangelism teams or food team that prepares food every night.

Then Monday through Wednesday we serve in areas we have signed up for, with Thursday being the final day, that has small amount of Bible Study, and then a carnival outreach for the kids and the community as a whole.

This is a tiring but very rewarding time for all who help, a good type of tired. My Sunday School class, is in charge of leading a team to continue follow up throughout the year, so the community doesn't feel abandoned or reached out to for only a specific time of the year. We will help continue the growth that was begun by Vacation Bible Study time and help the people learn even more of God and who He is.
