Purpose of Church part 2

There has been continued interest in purpose of church, so here's part 2. This evolved out of a discussion I have been having with a girl at bus stop. To bring it into context and where it came from.

Told her a few days ago that church is also a place to learn useful character qualities such as the "Fruit of the Spirit" found in Galatians 5:22. Those are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Again, simple looking list, but incredibly difficult to actually implement into my life.

Church also is a place to grow as a person with people that believe similarly to me, growing in knowledge and sharing that with others.

Similarly to last reason is, gaining knowledge from my pastor's message and then go and share with world around me.

Learn knowledge about Bible and help mentor those younger in the faith as they grow toward the image of Christ.

In sharing God and His Love, be a beacon of hope to a world largely without Hope.

Purpose of Church

I was asked an interesting question yesterday. It was what is the purpose of church? Interestingly it wasn't asked like person who hated church or was against church as I have been asked before. It was just an honest open curiosity of what church was all about. So let me unpack a bit what I view as the purpose of church is to myself and society.

To me church is valuable for a few reasons. The first being that church brings me closer to the God I worship, yes can worship God elsewhere, that is a given. There is just something about being with 3000 fellow believers who are there for same purpose, though. So please don't draw that I am saying you can only find God in a church or that is whole purpose of my blog, only saying for me, I am drawn even closer being around people of same mind-set and purpose than if I was off alone. Sort of a strength of numbers mindset.

Church is also a sorely needed moral-berometer for me, let me unpack that statement. I look around and see so much wrong and wrong being done in name of good and called good. The church I go to, Houston's First Baptist Church or @Houstonsfirst on twitter, challenges the mind-set and behavior of society not sugar-coating wrong or evil because it would be convenient to do so. Instead the church holds up perfection, which is God's very character as what we as Christians should strive for. Our church's worldview is this: "Relevant Biblical Community" Which I will expand on in a moment.

Will try to explain what a worldview is, which actually is fairly easy to understand when you consider it, a worldview is, how you as a person view the world around you and what you believe in regards to the world. So if you unpack our church's worldview the first word is "Relevant" which means that you have a bearing or connection with issue at hand. So too often, the world with good reason, says the church is irrelevant. so being relevant is an important area for church to explore and understand the importance for them to accomplish.

Next in my church's worldview, motto or mission statement as it were is "Biblical" That simply defined is relying on the fact the Bible is true, reliable and can be trusted to live your life by. That being said, at our church it becomes what we base our life on, the Bible is true and the Christ found in it is true. Think about that for a moment. That is a huge step of faith, which putting our trust in the unknown, the unseen and to the world around is scientifically unverifiable. But, truly that is another issue for another blog. My point for this blog being, living our life by what we believe is true, the Bible should be reflected to those around us and in our worldview.

Finally, in the mission statement is "Community" That sounds so easy or the easiest to accomplish of those threee words. Kind of a given, almost. Probably the hardest when we think about what community truly is. Community is family life, at the most simplest definition. This is what makes it so darn difficult to live out, I don't know about you all, but sometimes my family is very difficult to live around, be around or like at all. Yet we are called to not only love them but like them too. Huge. Christian when the word was coined 1000's of years ago, was an insult, saying they were "little Christ's" but that truly what we are to be to the world around us and even more so to our fellow followers of Christ. What kind of statement are we making if we don't love and like those that we claim to be alongside in following the God who is Love?!?

So to answer the question of what church is, to me is a place to be real, to be alongside people who believe the same things I do, trying to live out the call God has put on my life, to be there to help and be helped as we go along life's difficult hard journey. A place where we can be refreshed and get our bearing to go the way God has called us to walk along. A place of preparation to be there with people who may not be as experienced as us or much farther along then we are, sort of gearing up to go to war. Then going out to war for the week and come back and be received by fellow warriors and bind our wounds together to fight another battle.

continued inspiration sources

Hmmm,
where to begin, at the beginning, I know logical of me, haha. I draw a great deal of inspiration from my family, particularly my dad, he has gone through plenty both from personal stuff with me and brother and sister, and professionally. He lost his job and didn't get one for like a yr, quite a few yrs ago. Yey, even in his darkest hours, never gave up, never thought well might as well quit. He said he had like 3000 resumes out there and countless fruitless interviews, yet kept on. Personally he helped me with a drinking problem, despite numerous setbacks, never gave up on me. One of his mottos is, get knocked down, that's ok and to be expected in this life, but don't stay down.

I also get some of that inspiration as stated before from @louiegiglio , let me unpack a bit of who he is, he is a speaker who primarily is drawn to speak to college age listeners. He has started what is called the "268 Generation" based on Isaiah26:8 "Yes Lord, Walking in Your Ways, we wait for You. For Your Name and Renown are the desire of our hearts." People that are connected with him on here are @ChrisTomlinBand @charliehallband @Crowderband . Check him and all people connected to "Passion movement" are all about.

Another person to unpack who he is, is mr @JohnPiper , now bit of forewarning is needed. DO NOT leave ur brain at the door if you listen or read his work or to him. He is brilliant so bring the brain and learn alot. He is also connected to 268Generation but also speaks to anyone who is open to listening. Look up his name, get his books and take your time reading and understanding.

Next on my list to share a bit about is @RaviZacharias , he is a former Hindu, who does apologetics, which means he defends the Bible from all doubters by sharing what makes Bible authentic and believable. Extremely brilliant, yet makes his speeches and writings understandable to the average reader or listener.

@RickWarren has written a book almost everyone has read or heard about, "The Purpose-Driven Life" has written a follow up to it that comes out Nov17th, called "the Hope You Need" it deals with the Lord's Prayer. Definitely check both of those books out.

Finally on the big stage front is my pastor, guy who's birthday is 4 days apart from mine, he leads a church: @Houstonsfirst that is just under 25,000 members, but doesn't feel that is as important as being a "relevant Biblical community" Anyway he replaced a guy who was at church for 30 yrs, and has won both older and younger church members hearts as he slowly helps us toward the image of God, His name is @GreggMatte an amazign pastor.

Then there are all those people who are living the life they are called to, whether it's one of being well-known or toiling in obscurity. first the less-known, but ultimately just as important in their lives and what they do. I'm talking about the teachers, firemen, policemen and any of those people who go about their work, handle their business and don't expect or desire fame or recognition in what they do. Thank you to all of you who are out there doing thankless jobs and doing them well. Without you, life will be more difficult or impossible.

Next is the more well known individuals who are actually more interested in helping others than promoting themselves. So obviously this list CANNOT include Kanye West, who I will unpack a bit here. Let's think a bit on him, hmmm. He chooses, drunk or not, to hurt two people at a time when they should be happy. Now I'm not a fan of award shows, bore me, even if there are people on there I like and respect, just not my thing. Yet, was severely disappointed in KW's actions against @taylorswift13 , she is half his age yet he bullies her and discredits her win by dragging ms. Beyonce in to arguement. Basically forcing Beyonce to apologize and help Taylor by using her time to accept her award time to let Taylor reaccept hers. now I applaude Beyonce and Taylor's graciousness in all the drama. There several great well-known people on twitter to follow and who interact with fans and followers. These are people folks, not gods or anything above us, treat them as people, don't constantly pester them when they give off signals they are busy or doing something else.

I draw inspiration from those who treat others as well as they want to be treated or even better in most cases then they expect to be treated. Those that are the encouragers the ones who pick you from up off the ground. Be one of those people, be the change our country so desperately needs, it's not going to be the politicians who change the world, they don't truly understand what needs to be accomplished, or how to accomplish it, sorry if it steps on toes, but it is the way I view the political world, seems that those individuals have forgotten wgo they serve, that they are here to be the greatest country's in the world leaders in following in our forefather's footsteps. Not wander off on their own way. I say all this to say, we the people, see that, WE THE PEOPLE, are being called to be the daily difference and the change makers that we so desperately are looking for.

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected sources, so don't close yourself off from anyone on first glance, just because they are not exactly like you or what you are used to. Learn what you can and keep pressing forward.

Life in general

Just a quick blog, nothing major,like usual,lol.

I saw some interesting things today at McDonald's, was kinda hanging out and eating, watching what was going on with people coming in and out. Anyway, the first thing that stood out, was a lady asking about a lady who was homeless and leaving her a giftcard to help her out. to me that was just so neat, to take time out of her schedule, to care about a lady who probably is forgotten by alot of us. That would have been enough to make my day and make me smile the rest of the day, but there was more...

Then a group of young women came in, in their long flowing black gowns. And their musical instruments and their rolling suitcases. Right behind them were a crew of bout 15 skateboarders carrying their boards. The young ladies ordered and were wondering out loud, how they would be able to continue on down to the music hall about 10 blocks farther down, carrying everything they were already had and the food. The guys must have been paying attn, because they volunteered along with about 5 homeless people to help out. What a sight, of all them marching out and down the sidewalk, and people say there's nothing good and kind out there. Ha!!!

All from the land of McDonald's....

Thoughts on college football season

My thoughts on college football, as season has barely begun, now Oklahoma has the slimmest chance at national championship, Texas fans ur team played nobody and destroyed em, so essentially meaningless, no Colt isn't going to get championship or Heisman, sorry. Tebow and crew beat a nobody too, go get some real competition and then maybe earn right to talk. So no heisman for him either. Yes people Ok St is for real, with good quarterback and amazing wide receiver. Dez got blanketed for awhile but ultimately u cannot hold him down he's going to get his.

Penn St looked ok, Ohio St struggled but that against a very strong Navy team, so no worries for them, I think it's a good wake up call, fully expect Terrelle Pryor to be in Heisman hunt at end of season, yes I said it, so no for colt, tim or sam, my people in running for Heisman are Pryor, Snead:despite his struggle for game, a real talent. Jahvid Best is another I expect to be in thick of things, alongside Julio Jones, and some darkhorse I haven't seen yet.

My Florida State Seminoles are an interesting case study, offense is getting a lil better, with Christian Ponder back at QB, but rest of offense has some question marks, wide receivers need to step up, and running backs are not quite at right level to compete yet. Defensively we are at a high level, imagine if they had Myron Rolle, the premiere defensive back, bar none, he would have been a serious challenger for Heisman, yes he's that good.

All this to say, all those "contenders" for national championship, have not faced anything yet, so get over urselves. Long road to title, hang on it's a bumpy road. Go Noles

"All You need to know You learned in Kindergarten"

"All you really need to know you learned in kindergarten" is an incredible list, here it is: 1)Share everything 2)play fair 3)Don't hit people 4)Put things back where you found them 5)Clean up your own mess 6)Don't take things that aren't yours 7)Say you're sorry when you hurt someone 8)Wash your hands before you eat 9)Flush 10)Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you 11)Live a balanced life-learn some and think someand draw and paintand dance and play and work every day some 12)Take a nap every afternoon 13)When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together 14)Be aware of wonder.Remember the lil seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant comes up and nobody really knows why or how, but we are all like that. 15) goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup-they all die. So do we. 16)And then remember the Dick and Jane books and the first word you learned-the biggest word of all-look.

That is still a favorite list and something that makes me smile everytime I hear it or think of it. Simple yet, very profoundly so. Think on it, and then apply where you see fit. Kind of fits everywhere in our lives, doesn't it.

Football Season

Are you ready for some football?!? As I have said before, I love football season, particularly college football, partly because I get to chat with some very knowledgeable people such as, @bolanile, follow her, she is very smart both footballwise and in life. Kind of lil #twittercrush going on.

The reason I like college football, is it's a more pure, less bout money more bout the competition than the NFL. My favorite teams are Florida St. Seminoles and USC Trojans, though if FSU isn't playing Florida or Miami, will pull for both teams.

NFL wise i'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and will not waver in my allegiance, especially this season, with the "experts" all picking against them, bah, experts come and go, but Steeler excellence stays the same. Yes u can use that line if you want.

Also pull for the Houston Texans, gotta pull for hometown team, think they are another team that could "surprise" the "experts" and do really well this season. They are kinda a young version of Steelers with some solid defense line and picking up some good linebackers.

more of favs

There is lots of more of my likes that I have thought of, as far as type of people I like or am attrached to, it's those that have a goal, that seek to be better than they are. Those that are not settling for what the world offers, but keeps on going, a focus that doesn't waver or get distracted.

I also enjoy being around intelligent people, who know more about an area of expertise than me, that I can learn from. and share what I know about another area, I know about. Intelligence is sexy, it shows you are serious about yourself and being the best you can be.

More movies I enjoy are We are Marshall, Three Musketeers, Runaway Jury, both Transformers, Star Trek both older and the new one, Iron Man, Time to Kill, Drumline, Jet Li movies, anything with John Malkovich in it, Denzel's movies, Morgan Freeman's specifically Glory. umm Cruel Intentions, The Skulls:all three. Office Space. U get the picture.

More music I like is @charliehallband , David Crowder who has twitter acct, but can't think of his name on here. Jojo, Queensryche, Dokken.Dream Theater, @EmilyOsment , Caedmon's Call, the whole group from "Passion" the "268 Generation" Sugarland, Garth Brooks.

so my interests are kind of all over the place, but figure it's better to be open to all types of people and styles than limit myself or prejudice myself on what I have found on my own.

Favorite musical groups etc

Kind of continuing on favorites, musically I like Dave Matthews Band, see u all can get a copy of him in Central Park and u will understand why. Such a combination of jam rock with a strong jazz influence, Van Halen; Eddie and co are such an amazing group musically, Taylor Swift who I love for her ability to make music fun again w/o lowering her standards to be slutty like a certain age group ahead of her, yes talking to u Brit and Christina, to get u into her music and enjoy herself as she performs. ZZ Top, Queensryche:get Operation Mindcrime and see a rock opera in action. Metallica, Miley, @ChrisTomlinBand @mattredman and a few others, probably could list a million, depends on my mood. oh another is @ChantellePaige , love her voice so pure and another is @CarinaK definitely check her out.

Books I read are by James Patterson, James Rollins, Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, David Baldacci, Max Lucado, @JohnPiper @RickWarren @louiegiglio :watch his "Laminin" video on youtube, incredible. Ravi Zacharias, C.S. Lewis, again forgotten some. Oh Beth Moore, read her books and see if u can get a vidoe of her, from Living Proof Ministries, incredible speaker.

College teams I like are Florida St. Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, UCLA basketball USC football. Will continue to add what I like as I as I think of it.

Likes and dislikes

I was asked bout some of my likes and dislikes, so here goes....
Some of my likes, important to start with positives, anyone can state dislikes, but seeing positive makes a major difference in my life. I like sports, playing them and watching them, favorite pro teams are Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates, along with Denver Nuggets and NY Yankees. Like Phil Mickleson and Padraig Harrington, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis .

My favorite type of movie are action/drama, would watch "Lord of the Rings" trilogy over and over, such a powerful group of movies, Tombstone, Braveheart, A Few Good Men, Last of the Mohicans. Then comedywise anything with Seth Rogan and his crew, or Amanda Bynes in it. Enjoy @HilaryLDuff 's movies, for her fresh charming style she brings, also @RealEmRoberts style is great also. Another individual who always makes me smile and pull for her in her movies is @BrittanyASnow definitely check her out if you don't know her.

Favorite shows are NCIS, all the CSI's, House, Gossip Girl: an ex got me started on it, thanx alot ex,lol. Leverage, Dark Blue, Royal Pains, and couple others.

Favorite type of people are those that are real, genuine, purpose-driven, who lift up those around them instead of dragging them down to their level. Those who encourage and inspire people to be more than they already are, as stated before some of these are @RickWarren @JohnPiper @GreggMatte @louiegiglio these men bring such a powerful word to those who will listen.

My list of dislikes is fairly short, mainly cause it is so much less enjoyable, and not called to live in the negative and dwell there. I dislike the fake or untrue, probably because I used to try and impress those around me with what in reality I'm not. So, enjoy those that are real and true to themselves, even if it isn't as "pretty or attractive" as you think the world wants or is looking for. If you're not true to yourself, then who can you be true to? Just a thought. People constantly ask my opinion of the "fakes or posers" on twitter, my thought is this: if the people need or desire to be seen as someone or something else, then it is on them. Don't try to change them or show they are fake, let the twitter police get them, or change on their own. I have been called a fake, my question is what am I a fake of? someone said Corbin Bleu, but why would he make a new acct, and put someone completely unknown as pic, lol. That's all I did laughed out loud, just found it so funny. Life is just too short to dwell on all that is wrong in this world. Get over the fact that life is unfair, cause it is, so move on.

Moving on, suppose another dislike is people writing others off because of preconceived notions, I try to give everyone a chance, cause have idea of what I will learn from that person. There are so many amazing people on twitter, that I have learned from, take time to see what a person brings to the table, and then if you don't like it or disagree then move on. At least you have taken time to see if you can learn from them.

That's some of my likes and dislikes, to answer some of the questions, more blogs to come.
